Picking Your Blue

In summary, selecting the perfect hue requires balancing the effects of natural light, the size of your space, and how the color interacts with existing kitchen features. Include what appeals to you in style and you can choose a blue that ensures your blue kitchen enhances the overall appeal and atmosphere of your home. Picking the right shade of blue for your kitchen involves an analysis of several factors:

  • Consider the natural light. Rooms with abundant sunlight can handle darker blues without feeling gloomy, while spaces with limited light benefit from lighter, brighter blues for a more spacious and welcoming feeling
  • Take the size of your kitchen into account. Smaller kitchens tend to feel larger with soft, pale blues, whereas larger spaces can afford to experiment with a broader spectrum of blue, from navy to turquoise, without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Reflect on your existing decor. Your current kitchen finishes, such as countertops and flooring, should harmonize with your chosen blue. Look for undertones in your existing materials that might complement or clash with different shades of blue. A cohesive look is achieved when the blue harmonizes with other elements rather than competing with them.

Bringing the blue into the backsplash is a way to increase the impact of the blue in your kitchen. In the pictures above, on the left, the backsplash is an off white lightly textured tile. In the picture on the right (kitchen of Kelby Grigsby) the blue is carried into the backsplash in a subtle blue print, emphasizing the blue ambiance.

Other Considerations

  • Mix textures and materials: Incorporate various textures and materials to keep the visual interest alive. Matte finishes on cabinets paired with glossy tiles, or vice versa, can provide depth. Metal fixtures in brass or copper offer a striking contrast to blue tones.
  • Consider the mood: Blue tones influence mood and appetite subtly. Choose your shade according to the ambiance you wish to create. Lighter blues make your kitchen feel more spacious and clean, while deeper blues add sophistication and drama.
  • Experiment with patterns: Tile backsplashes, patterned flooring, or even wallpaper can introduce dynamic patterns into your kitchen without overshadowing the blue tones. Geometric patterns, in particular, can add interest and modern flair to your kitchen design.
  • Add personal touches: Finally, personalize your blue kitchen with unique accents that reflect your style. Antique finds, art pieces, or handcrafted items can add layers of interest and make your kitchen truly your own.

I have embraced pattern in 2 strong ways- first in my hexagonal backsplash and secondly in the bold inserts in my cabinet doors.

I posted a picture of these cabinets in a Facebook post. Most people accepted the cabinets, several complimented them and, as expected there were some people who hated them.  One of my favorite comments was from a hater who proclaimed that the cabinets were psychedelic and she wouldn’t have anything like that in her kitchen. The print would give her migraines. The print doesn’t give me migraines, it gives me joy.

In essence, embracing a blue color scheme in your kitchen renovation or makeover can lead to a refreshing, stylish, and interesting cooking space. By choosing your shade of blue carefully, and balancing it with the right elements, you can create a kitchen that stands out yet feels perfectly in tune with the rest of your home’s design. The possibilities are as vast as the sea itself, allowing each blue kitchen to tell its own unique story.
