Sage and Apple Turkey Burger

A fast and easy ground turkey recipe for a delicious meal.

My cooking goals are simple. I strive to make delicious, reasonably priced, healthy food. This turkey burger, made with grated apple and sage, meets those requirements.

Every night I approach dinner like a treasure hunt. To keep dinner prep from transforming into relentless tedium, (chop, sauté, simmer, repeat), I keep a roster of easy-to-make, delicious, healthy recipes. Looking for a healthy, reasonably priced meal I often turn to ground turkey, which is unfortunately, the poster child for bland. This year I found several, tasty ways to use ground turkey in the dinner rotation.

This first recipe includes grated apples- a direct result of incredibly prolific apple trees. With so many apples, I canned, baked and dehydrated with no noticeable reduction in apples. I threw apples into everything I cooked.

In doing so, I discovered something new, a turkey burger evoking the flavor of a savory sausage.

The secret: shredded apple and sage.

Ingredients:
1 pound ground turkey
10 sage leaves or 3/4 tsp dried sage
1 apple grated with a coarse grater
1 Tablespoon maple syrup
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper (optional)

Instructions:

If making stove top you will need approximately 1 tablespoon of oil – I use olive oil cause I use olive oil for everything but you can choose the oil of your choice.

Instead of cooking stove top, you can cook in the air fryer, which requires no oil.

Combine all ingredients except the oil. For consistent sized patties, use a measuring cup to scoop out mixture and make into patties. Depending on the size of my buns, I use a third or a half cup per burger.

Air fryer version:
Lay the patties on a parchment paper covered plate. Cover with more parchment paper. Put in the freezer for 10 minutes of refrigerator for 20.
Take to air fryer and place them non touching and cook at 375 approximately 14 minutes. Use a meat thermometer check for 165 F temperature.

Stovetop version:
Heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat then place the patties in the hot oil. Sauté
Flip when first side is brown Remove from pan when internal temperature reaches 165 F
